Accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, via the Ontario Police College to the hosting police service. The CCII, Crisis Negotiators Course has instructed and qualified members of the Brantford P.S., Windsor P.S., York Regional P.S., Sudbury P.S., Toronto ETF, Durham Regional P.S, Stratford P.S, West Nipissing P.S. and Nishnawbe-Aski P.S. The Crisis Negotiators Course provides a current and comprehensive understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Crisis Negotiator in a 5-day period. Crisis Negotiating with a hostage, barricaded, or suicidal person is among the most stressful and difficult task a police officer will encounter. The course will review the Incident Command Triangle, their respective roles, and the need for a coordinated effort to resolve the incident with minimal tactical intervention. Concepts and philosophy of crisis negotiations, subject/suspect assessment, mental illnesses and how to deal with emotionally disturbed person(s) will be explored to develop the Negotiator’s ability to use defusing techniques, enhance active listening and effective communication skills.
You will also gain further insight into the Negotiator’s role in scene management. To successfully complete this course you will be required to participate in a scenario based training exercise. Arrangements will be made for a Forensic Psychiatrist or Forensic Psychologist to discuss the value of having a Psychiatrist or Psychologist at the Command Post to support the Incident Commander and Crisis Negotiation Team. They will review the skills needed to recognize and understand common mental illnesses and the challenges while attending with those suffer from a mental illness and in a state of crisis. They will also discuss critical incident stress and cumulative stress.
