This course is designed to help Special Constables understand and deal with individuals who are expressively violent, suffering mental illness or in a state of crisis. In the case of a high risk incident in a court house setting, Special Constables will play an important role in major incidents and this course will allow them to gain an understanding of the requirements and responsibilities of the Command Triangle, Critical Incident Commander, Crisis Negotiating Team, Tactical Team, Command Post, and Scene Manager in order to understand their own critical roles and responsibilities and become part of the communal team effort and effective resolution of critical incidents. This course will review the concepts and techniques of crisis negotiations and subject assessment, suicide intervention and communicating with subjects in a hostage situation, who are expressively violent, suffering from mental illness or in a state of crisis. Attendees will participate in scenario-based training with classroom lectures and practical exercises.
The course will augment Use of Force training and assist Special Constables in understanding, and applying Ontario’s Use of Force Model, understanding the need for excellent note taking, articulation and use of force report writing and understanding the theory and avoidance of officer induced jeopardy and the psychology and physiology of stress arousal response
This course is co-instructed by two experienced officers, a former senior officer who is an experienced Critical Incident Commander & Tactical Commander, who has over 20 years’ experience as a crisis negotiator and is an experienced trainer in Crisis Negotiations and Incident Command and will include local content by consulting your Police Service’s tactical team lead in the course instruction. The second instructor is a former tactical officer, a current qualified and experienced Use of Force instructor who was an advisory member for the MCSCS Focus Group tasked with developing a new Decision Making Model for Ontario’s new UOF Model. This highly qualified trainer is FAPL qualified, a master Taser Instructor, Shotgun / Carbine and Response to Active Shooter Instructor and has developed training for special constables in the courthouse setting.
